There Is No Such Thing As Bad Tea

There is no such thing as bad tea.

This is a line that’s been used by Billy Dietz in his new book “Spill The Tea”. Billy is a Tea Innovation Advisor at DAVIDsTEA (one of the largest tea companies in North America). Although this book is mainly about blended teas, this line of no tea is bad tea hits home for me in another way.

When you start taking tea more “seriously” (aka just getting into more specialty teas) you can’t help but notice how too many people start to judge others for drinking lower quality teas. But very VERY few people start out with these super high quality specialty teas. I call it a tea journey.

Take myself for example, I didn’t just never have tea before then hop into specialty teas and create a tea business. I grew up drinking instant tea dust/powder from Lipton at home and iced tea from restaurants. I had no idea about specialty teas. I didn’t even think I would like hot tea. But I went to a cafe one day and ordered an English breakfast black tea and it came out in a teapot and had the whole brewing process in front of me. From that moment on I was absolutely hooked! I went home and learned and learned about teas, and I haven’t stopped.

There’s no way I would have ever even ordered that English breakfast in the cafe that day if I never had any tea beforehand. Everyone has their likes and dislikes in foods and drinks. There is absolutely no reason why people should judge others for enjoying a lower quality tea. In fact, for me, I tell people to try the lower quality teas! If you try and love it, then awesome! You find something you love, and it’s easy on the wallet. Seems like a win win to me. I just tell people, don’t judge all of tea or even that type of tea based on that lower quality version. Teas vary so much when you go up and down in quality. Also there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of different varieties of each type of tea.

So overall, just enjoy the tea that you enjoy. It’s your taste buds and your tea experience. Don’t let other people get under your skin or tell you what is good or not. Enjoy your tea journey, and like Billy Dietz said…

There is no such thing as bad tea.
